What Is a Chemical Peel?

Chemical peels involve the careful application of chemical solutions by a skincare professional to precisely remove the outer layer of the skin. This process creates a controlled injury to the skin, prompting it to shed damaged cells and naturally repair itself. A chemical peel reveals new, healthy skin and a rejuvenated complexion by reducing the appearance of wrinkles and blemishes, smoothing uneven texture, improving dullness and uneven tone, and shrinking large pores. Each treatment is highly customizable, allowing our skincare providers to create a combination of ingredients tailored to your specific skin type and unique concerns.

What Can a Chemical Peel Treat?

Chemical peels can address a range of minor and major imperfections in the skin, including fine lines and wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, dullness, skin laxity, irregular texture, dry skin, unwanted freckles, acne, large pores, scarring, sun damage, uneven skin tone, melasma and rosacea. Your skincare provider will recommend a treatment plan based on the concerns and goals discussed during your consultation.

What Kinds of Chemical Peels Are Available?

Chemical peels are available in three strength levels, each of which is designed to accomplish different goals:

Light chemical peels use a gentler formula to treat superficial concerns like dryness, minor discoloration and uneven texture with little to no downtime. They are ideal for patients who want visible improvements but do not want the longer recovery times associated with deeper peels.

Medium chemical peels use a stronger formula to address fine lines, acne, pigmentation problems and other mild to moderate skin imperfections. They may require some downtime, depending on how quickly each patient’s body heals following treatment.

Deep chemical peels use an intense formulation to treat deep wrinkles, deeper dark spots, severe sun damage and other concerns that cannot be corrected with less aggressive peels. While deep peels require the most downtime and aftercare, they can deliver the most dramatic results.

Who Is a Good Candidate for a Chemical Peel?

Ideal candidates for a chemical peel are those who wish to improve the appearance and health of their skin, do not smoke, are in good physical health and have realistic expectations about their results. Men and women with fair skin and light hair may achieve the best results from a chemical peel, but patients with other skin tones and hair colors can also experience good results with a qualified practitioner. Chemical peels are typically not recommended for people who have extremely sensitive skin, have a sunburn, are nursing or pregnant, have taken certain medication in the last six months, or have active acne, rosacea, psoriasis, eczema, cold sores or fever blisters.

During your consultation at Time 4 U Med Spa, a member of our experienced staff will determine if a professional chemical peel is right for you and help you choose the best peel for your skin.

What Should I Expect During Treatment?

Some aspects of the procedure differ according to the strength of the peel chosen by the patient. In all cases, the skin is first cleaned before the chemical solution is applied. Patients commonly report feeling a tingling, stinging or warm sensation while the solution sits on the skin. After the peel solution has been on the skin for the prescribed amount of time, the solution is removed and a soothing ointment is applied. Patients will be given post-treatment instructions regarding appropriate aftercare before returning home. For deeper peels, a sedative may be used to aid relaxation. Topical anesthesia may also be applied to numb the treatment area, and a minor pain reliever may be used to further reduce discomfort during recovery.

Do Chemical Peels Require Any Downtime?

The amount of downtime required after a chemical peel varies depending on the strength of the peel. Light peels generally allow patients to return to their regular routine with little or no downtime and minimal peeling. Medium peels may require several days to a week of recovery, during which patients may experience redness, dryness and itching as the skin sheds its outer layer. Deep peels require the most significant recovery period since a stronger formula can cause more discomfort, swelling, redness and irritation. Patients will need to avoid sun exposure for a set amount of time and take proper steps to protect their skin as it heals over the subsequent weeks.

What Are the Potential Side Effects of a Chemical Peel?

Chemical peels are safe when administered by one of the qualified professionals at Time 4 U Med Spa. As with any treatment involving potent ingredients, adverse reactions are possible, including swelling, infection, scarring and changes in skin tone. Serious complications are rare and minimized when the procedure is performed by an expert. Side effects can be further reduced by providing your skincare provider with a complete medical history, as well as carefully following all pre-care and post-care instructions.

What Kind of Results Can Be Expected?

Chemical peels are a highly effective method of skin rejuvenation that can:

Reduce fine lines and wrinkles

Remove dead skin cells

Treat active acne

Counteract sun damage

Even out skin tone

Reduce visible scars

Shrink pore size

Improve skin discoloration

Make skin softer and smoother

Improvement can be seen after only a single treatment. A series of peels produces lasting results and the most dramatic transformation. How frequently a chemical peel should be administered will vary according to the depth and concentration of the peel and your individual skin concerns and treatment goals.
