What Should I Expect During My Treatment?

During your treatment, Dr. Gulcher will discuss your concerns and create a treatment plan that utilizes the best product for delivering smooth and even results. A topical anesthetic may be applied at the start of treatment to provide a numbing effect, although most fillers are formulated with lidocaine to actively numb the treatment area during injection. Once any numbing cream has been applied and the treatment sites have been chosen, Dr. Gulcher will begin administering the filler to the desired areas using a series of injections.

Most filler appointments last just 15 to 30 minutes, and patients are free to immediately return to work or other normal activities.

What Are the Potential Side Effects?

Fillers are a gentle and nonsurgical anti-aging treatment option that produces minimal side effects. Commonly, patients experience a small amount of swelling, bruising, redness and tenderness around the treatment areas. Dr. Gulcher’s skill and experience as a board-certified injector minimize the risk of bruising and other unwanted side effects. Patients may experience some minor swelling for up to a week, and ice can be used as needed to prevent excessive puffiness. Any bruising may be covered up with makeup as desired.

Do Fillers Require Any Downtime?

Filler appointments do not require any downtime, allowing patients to resume their normal schedules immediately following their treatment. Some patients may wish to avoid going out in public for 24 to 48 hours due to visible side effects, however. Patients can resume exercise and other strenuous activities as soon as they feel comfortable doing so.

What Kind of Results Can Be Expected?

Following a traditional dermal filler appointment, patients can enjoy an immediate improvement in their facial contours and a noticeable reduction in prominent signs of aging. Swelling and bruising will temporarily affect results, however, so most patients tend to look best about three to seven days following their appointment.

Sculptra results will take longer to become visible. Patients may not notice any improvement for the first few weeks, although results will continue to develop following each treatment. Dr. Gulcher can discuss all specifics with you and lay out a timeline for results during your consultation.

How Long Do Results Last?

The duration of results will vary based on the specific filler used and how quickly the patient’s body breaks down the hyaluronic acid. Juvéderm products typically last nine to 18 months, while Sculptra’s results can last up to three years. Patients should plan on scheduling regular maintenance appointments to ensure their results are long-lasting. Most patients come in at least once per year to maintain their youthful results.
